CAREER OPPORTUNITY

 

The Office of the Children’s Registry (OCR) is Agency under the portfolio of the Ministry of Education, Youth & Information, for the purpose of a central place for reporting incidents of children who are known or suspected to be abused, neglected or in need of care and protection. The OCR is also responsible for the management of the Ananda Alert System. Suitably qualified and competent persons are invited to fill the position of:

 

PUBLIC EDUCATION OFFICER (MCG/IE 4) (CONTRACT)

 

Reporting directly to the Registrar, the incumbent’s responsibilities will include:

• Engage in the strategic planning and budgeting process for the OCR and the Public Education Unit and the public education component for the Ananda Alert Secretariat;
• Coordinate all information emanating from the OCR and serve as the official information officer of the OCR;
• Manage the OCR’s media relations to ensure that the media is provided with appropriate information about the work of the OCR;
• Plan, develop and oversee the implementation / delivery of on-going Public Education Programmes such as presentations, consultations, exhibitions, talks, features etc., to ensure that the public is kept up to date on the services provided by the OCR;
• Plan and direct research and client service evaluation including customer satisfaction surveys and ensure that the needs of clients are communicated to the relevant Units;
• Prepare speeches and background papers for public presentation by the Registrar/staff;
• Undertake the planning and coordination of special functions and events to mark special occasions /observances of the OCR / Ananda Alert system;
• Implementation of the OCR Newsletter; and oversee the development, production and dissemination of the Ananda Alert Newsletter;
• Collating and final production of the Annual Report for the OCR;

 

Minimum Training and Experience

• Bachelors Degree in Mass Communications, Journalism or Equivalent specialization
• Minimum of five (5) years experience in Corporate Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or Media Relations, at least two (2) years of which must be in a supervisory capacity
• Intimate knowledge of the media landscape in Jamaica
• Familiarity with government’s policies and programmes

Key Competencies Required

• Excellent knowledge of the Child Care and Protection Act and the Regulations
• Excellent knowledge of mass communication techniques
• Excellent presentation skills
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Excellent leadership, management and coordination skills
• Excellent in speech writing and preparation of press releases
• Excellent knowledge and competence in participating in media interviews (radio & television)
• Very good analytical and problem solving skills
• Very good computer applications skills (Excel/Word/PowerPoint, etc.)

 

Full Upkeep Allowance is attached to the position and as such, applicants must have full time use of a reliable motor vehicle.
